Doping Update - Lance Armstrong didn't flinch--and didn't lie--coming clean about the fact that he has used performance enhancing drugs and techniques in all seven of the Tour de France races he has won. On the phone with us to talk about this is James Raia, a longtime sports and cycling writer.
Seasonal Flu - This year's flu season is not only off to an early start around the country but it's been called "particularly severe" by the Food and Drug Administration. Five people in California have died from the virus in the past weeks and experts are predicting an outbreak to peak in the Golden State in the coming weeks. We'll speak with infectious disease experts about ways you can avoid the flu and prevent spreading it. Plus, we'll discuss why this year's dominant flu strain is more severe than previous years and what it means for a flu strain to be "severe."
Capitol Chat - In this week's Capitol Chat, Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler joins us with a preview of the upcoming State of the State speech from Governor Jerry Brown, as well as the 2013 Presidential Inauguration, happening on Monday, January 21st.
The Taste - Anthony Bourdain, the James Beard Award, Thomas Keller, Bouchon, Christine Keff--these are all terms and names that have become familiar and well-respected, partly due to the rise in popularity of celebrity chefs and foodie television. Adam Pechal, head chef and owner of the well-loved Tuli Resturant Group (Tuli Restaurant, Thir13een, Tuli Catering), is joining these ranks as he debuts on ABC's new reality cooking show, The Taste, in which culinary experts like Anthony Bourdain and British food star Nigella Lawson mentor competing pro and amateur cooks vie to turn out the best dish through team and individual challenges. Adam is hosting a premiere party at Restaurant Thir13en at 6:30pm on January 22nd.
John McCutcheon - Wikipedia describes Grammy-nominated American folk musician John McCutcheon as "master of the hammered dulcimer" as well as proficient on the guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, and jawharp. 2013 marks McCutcheon's 40th anniversary as a professional musician and he still has a few new tricks up his sleeve. For one, a new album is due to be released at the end of 2013 and McCutcheon has planned to release a new demo each month before then, giving listeners an insight into his songwriting process. He's playing at multiple venus in the region from January 15-22, beginning with The Big Room in Chico and ending at the Peace and Life Center in Modesto.
